In an increasingly globalized world, English has become a universal language for hospitality professionals and a necessity for career advancement. The Hospitality English Certificate was specially designed to assist individuals, who are or will be in the hospitality industry, with improving their ability to express themselves in English when dealing with guests and coworkers.
It covers a wide range of hospitality situations and the vocabulary, phrases, expressions and common courtesies that are appropriate to those situations. HEC is not an ESL program, but rather has been specifically designed for people who already have a basic to intermediate level of English fluency and who wish to enhance their ability and gain confidence in using English appropriately in hospitality settings.
HEC aims to provide participants with effective communication tools, and the confidence, to skillfully and diplomatically deal with everyday situations and problems that arise with guests, coworkers, and supervisors.
The course consists of a series of online, self-study seminars. The seminars are presented as PowerPoints with voice-overs, allowing participants to hear and repeat specific vocabulary and expressions. Each seminar sets specific exercises to improve fluency and writing ability and refers to specific chapters of the Hospitality English textbook which participants can download and use for further study. The textbook includes chapters on English grammar for personal review.
HEC seminars include the following topics:
- Common courtesies
